Hydrogen fueling interaction

Client: Dover Fueling Solutions

Team: Carl Forslund, Melissa Ljung

Designed while employed at Zenit Design

Challenge

Hydrogen refueling involves unique technical risks and regulatory requirements, which can be intimidating for new users. The challenge was to create a system that could reduce user anxiety while reinforcing safe behaviours - especially under real-world conditions like time pressure, distractions or inexperience of refueling hydrogen. Additionally, the interface needed to integrate with Dover’s hardware systems and future product vision.

Goal

Redesigning refueling for safety, clarity, and clean energy adoption

Approach

We began with observational research from hydrogen fueling stations to understand how users currently navigate the process and where confusion or hesitation occurs. We also made a market analysis and benchmarking of existing fuelling interfaces and experiences. This led to the development of low-fidelity prototypes which were iteratively tested and refined. The interface design included a digital display that guided users step-by-step, reinforced by simple language, icons, and audio-visual feedback. Animated sequences were integrated to explain critical steps in a safe and engaging way.
